Metlink along with Massey and Victoria University are excited to have you visit the capital to consider a future here. We can show you how to get around the city on public transport.
Metlink runs the public transport network for the Wellington region, which includes rail, bus, and ferry services. We have put together some key information to get you moving around the city.
The first thing is to download our app, this helps you have information easily and fast. Getting around with Metlink is easy.
Paying for your trip
The best options are to buy a Snapper card or use your debit/credit card to tag on and off the bus and train. For buses you tag on and off on the bus but for trains you tag on and off at the platform.
With both Snapper cards and credit/debit cards, you receive 20% discount on full adult fares.
If you are taking the ferry on weekdays, you can purchase tickets for the 10am and 12pm sailings from Queens Wharf 30 minutes before departure from the ticket office nearby. Ticket sales close 10 minutes before departure time. At all other times (and if travelling from Days Bay) tickets can be purchased onboard using EFTPOS and Credit card.

Our real-time information (RTI) allows you to track our public transport services and stay updated in real-time. This happens on the app but also at stops where there are RTI screens available

To help you get between Victoria University campuses and halls of residence, Victoria University will also be running specially marked free looping buses between 8.45 am and 3 pm on Open Day.

Tickets & fares
Contactless payment
You can pay using a physical VISA or Mastercard, or a digital version stored on your mobile phone or smart watch. You can’t pay for someone else - each person must use their own card.
Unlike when you use a Snapper card, when you use the debit or credit payment method you will not see the fare to be charged when you tag off on the bus validator or platform card readers.
Snapper
Snapper is the best option if you are a student and plan to travel a lot. It is an electronic payment card for buses and trains that provides you with more flexible payment and travel options. You can use one Snapper to pay for multiple people at one time on the bus, which can be handy if you’re out with the family or friends. Trains are different - one person per card only, so everyone needs to have one.
Concessions
As a university student, Metlink offers a 25% discount on adult fares for eligible full-time tertiary students, on all Metlink services. (This is not on top of the snapper/debit/credit card 20% discount)
If you're still in high school, you’re eligible for a child snapper which has a 50% discount.
Any concession you have loaded on your Snapper card will work automatically, and you will be charged with the discounted fare determined by your concession.
