April 2026 - Work continuing with several key milestones now complete
Work on the Woburn Railway Station Strengthening and Refurbishment Project continues to make strong progress, with several key milestones now completed.
To date, the project team has successfully installed the major structural steelwork, poured the new concrete slab, and completed the main framing works.
These elements represent an important step in strengthening the station and preparing it for the next stages of refurbishment, while carefully preserving the station’s historic character.
The team has worked through a number of challenges to reach this point. As an island platform station, access to the site is restricted and requires careful coordination around rail operations. In addition, several severe storm events earlier in the year caused unavoidable delays.
Despite these challenges, work has continued steadily and safely.
Upcoming Works
Over the Easter break, crews will be on site to take advantage of reduced train movements. Planned activities during this period include:
- Completing foundation works for new platform signage
- Finishing all remaining works on the canopies located close to the track
Undertaking these tasks over the holiday period will help minimise disruption to passengers and allow critical work near the rail corridor to be completed efficiently.
Looking Ahead
With the main structural components now in place, the project will continue to move into the next phase of refurbishment works. The team remains focused on delivering a safer, more resilient station while respecting its heritage significance.
Thank you to passengers and the wider community for their patience and support as work continues.
The project is now expected to be finished early June 2026.
The Woburn Station upgrade remains on track to deliver important improvements for passengers, with a slightly revised completion date. Originally planned for completion in February 2026, the project is now expected to be finished late March 2026.
The updated timeline reflects several factors, including findings from recent geotechnical investigations, the shop drawing review process, and KiwiRail’s concurrent rerailing work which had a compounding effect on the schedule.
The Woburn Station upgrade work begins on 15 September and lasts until Feb 2026. The station building will be closed during construction, but a temporary shelter is available 20m north of the building for passengers to use. Train services continue as normal.
Benefits
This upgrade will allow more people to wait comfortably for the train.
