Waitangi Long Weekend 2026

Friday 6 February - Sunday 8 February 2026

Kāpiti, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa Lines

The Kāpiti, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa Lines will be closed over the Waitangi long weekend (Friday 6 February to Sunday 8 February 2026), with buses replacing trains.

On Friday (Waitangi Day), services will run on a Sunday timetable, the rest of the weekend runs as normal - so weekend timetables operate on all three days.

Buses replacing trains on the Hutt Valley Line will detour due to roadworks on Ewen Bridge – travel will take longer than usual, and additional delays may be caused by traffic congestion. Delays are expected, and passengers are encouraged to check timetables before travelling.

All rail line services will resume on regular timetables from Monday 9 February 2026.

Johnsonvile Line

Trains will run as normal on the Johnsonville Line. On Friday (Waitangi Day), services will run on a Sunday timetable, the rest of the weekend runs as normal - so weekend timetables operate on all three days.

Melling Line

On Friday (Waitangi Day), services will run on a Sunday timetable, and there will be no Melling line services over the whole Waitangi Weekend.

Bus replacement locations

Buses replacing trains will stop at the train station's designated bus stop.

Tagging on and off bus replacement services

All rail customers using the bus-replacing-trains service should tag on and off on the bus, except for the Wairarapa Line customers who need to tag on and off at the platform.

If you are boarding the bus in Greytown, please tag on and off at the validator located outside 73 Main Street (Studio 73).

Off-peak fares will apply over the Waitangi long weekend as these apply on weekends and public holidays.

Building a Better Rail Network for the Wellington Region

Metlink are working closely with key partners to upgrade and future-proof our rail network. We can't make these upgrades while trains are running, so planned rail closures are put in place so we can get to work.

We schedule these works during long weekends and summer holidays, when fewer people are travelling to keep disruption to a minimum.

While you’re enjoying a break, we are hard at work strengthening the network and improving reliability for years to come.

We appreciate your patience during these planned closures and will keep you informed around how this may affect your travel.

Take a look below to check out improvements made during past closures.
