North Island Rail Connection
Description
The Lower North Island Rail Integrated Mobility (LNIRIM) programme is delivering a transformative upgrade to regional rail services. At its heart is Tūhono – a fleet of 18 five-car battery-electric multiple unit (BEMU) trains, the first of their kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tūhono, meaning “to connect” or “to unite,” symbolises regional connection and improved access for the communities they serve. It tells the story of a train that is more than just a mode of transport — it is a living thread that weaves together the diverse communities of the lower North Island.
Designed for New Zealand’s unique rail conditions, Tūhono trains will operate on both electrified and non-electrified tracks, switching seamlessly to battery power where needed. This innovation will support more frequent, reliable, and sustainable services across the Wairarapa and Manawatū lines, connecting communities from Masterton and Palmerston North to Wellington from 2030.
The programme also includes significant infrastructure improvements, such as upgraded stations, new stabling yards, and passing loops to support the expanded fleet and timetable.
