KiwiRail: Historical Maintenance
Description
A large investment has gone into overdue upgrades, which includes replacing worn-out track and structures, redoing drainage systems and stabilising slopes.
On the Wairarapa Line, the team is replacing all tracks (including inside tunnels and over bridges) in addition to drainage and vegetation work. The Kāpiti Line will see stabilisation work. Along the Johnsonville Line, tracks are being replaced inside 7 tunnels. At the Wellington Railway Station, the team is renewing tracks and track connections.
Updates
Most track work is complete except for Maoribank Tunnel (expected early 2024) and Remutaka Tunnel (expected early 2025).
Benefits
A safer and more resilient network that can support future passenger growth.
Customer Impact
Work will take place during planned 'blocks of line' on public holidays and during the annual network shutdown. Disrupted services will be replaced by bus.
