Meet Michelle – Taking in Wairarapa views from behind the wheel

Driving a bus through the rolling hills and farmland of Wairarapa is “just heaven” according to Michelle, who works for Tranzit, a Metlink operator.

“When you’re out there on the road and come down a hill with that view in front of you, you just think, oh here I am! It’s a little slice of paradise.”

Michelle has been driving Tranzit Wairarapa buses for just over a year after moving with her family to Greytown.

She had never driven large vehicles before, but after relocating from Christchurch, she decided to get her class 2 license to broaden her job opportunities and, in her words, “Tranzit opened the door”.

Michelle says Greytown’s country feel and access to hikes and outdoor activities were what appealed to her family when choosing where to move.

Her husband and two kids enjoy getting out and exploring the walks around the region, but Michelle is happiest relaxing at home.

“After a 13-hour shift, it’s great to put your feet up,” she says.

She loves their house and is particularly committed to keeping the lawns and garden ship shape.

On the job, the Martinborough run is her favourite route.

“It’s a big day, but the views are so beautiful and it’s so lovely going up and down the valley – to be out in the countryside. I love the independence of driving – I find it so relaxing.”

When Michelle was in training she says it took her a while to get used to the size of the buses, but driving bus replacement services over the Remutaka Hill got her up to speed quickly.

The job has also made her a more considerate driver to buses when she’s in her own car.

“It helps a lot when people just have a little consideration for the bus,” she says.

“Now I know what it’s like – I know you can’t accelerate as quickly as people think, like in a car where you can just take off. You’re dealing with a much bigger vehicle and have to make sure it’s a smooth ride for your passengers too.”

Ngā mihi nui Michelle for all your mahi!

16 November is Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Just before you tag off, remember to call out “Thank you driver!” nice and loud.
