Melling Station Closure

Stations Routes

Description

Melling Station, and its park-and-ride facilities, will close on 24 December 2025 for about three years as construction of the Melling Transport Improvements for Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi gets underway.

During this time the Melling line will terminate at Western Hutt.

While the station is closed, the area will be redesigned to accommodate a safer, more resilient and accessible transport system in Lower Hutt. The station itself will be relocated further south as part of a new public transport interchange and will align with the CityLink pedestrian bridge, both of which are part of the overall programme improvements.

While Melling Station is closed you can:
  • Catch the train from Western Hutt, Waterloo, Woburn, Ava or Petone (fares on the Hutt Valley line are the same)
  • Connect with bus routes 145 and 149 which will take you to Waterloo Station.

  • Board the 83 bus at Queensgate to ride direct into Wellington
  • Bike along Te Ara Tupua path – bike storage racks are available at Petone and Waterloo
  • Use the additional park-and-ride spaces that will be available at Petone Station from December 2025

Partnerships

Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi(external link) is a partnership between iwi Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Greater Wellington, Hutt City Council, and New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Benefits

Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi will deliver:

  • A new grade-separated (elevated) interchange at Melling
  • A new citylink pedestrian bridge over Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River that will connect the interchange to Lower Hutt CBD
  • Upgrades to the existing stopbank which will give the river more room to move. This will protect the CBD and other valuable infrastructure assets to withstand the effects of a 1-in-440-year flood
  • The relocation and upgrade of Melling train station and park-and-ride facilities to align with the new city link pedestrian bridge
  • New and improved walking and cycling paths.
