Proposal for bus stop changes on the Route 110

Bus Route 110 is Lower Hutt’s only high-frequency bus service and a key transport link between northern suburbs, the CBD, Petone, and Upper Hutt. To support this service and ensure it remains accessible to all users—including people with reduced mobility, caregivers with prams, and cyclists—Metlink are upgrading the bus stops along the route.

A major goal is to allow buses to align parallel to the kerb, enabling step-free boarding and disembarking for all passengers. This is not currently possible at the below stops on the Route 110. Please select a stop to read about the proposed changes and provide feedback.

Bus stop proposals
What is being proposed for #9256 High Street opposite 1382:
  • Install 9.0 metre entry and exit tapers (broken yellow lines)
  • Extend bus box to 15.0 metres (an additional 4.0 metres)
  • Extend concrete standing pad.
  • Remove existing road marking in blue.
  • Remove x2 parking spaces
Minimising the impact on parking

Metlink recognise the importance of on-street parking and have worked to minimise changes, therefore, entry and exit tapers have been shortened from the standard 15 metres to 9 metres without compromising safety. Where possible, markings are aligned with existing driveways to avoid reducing available parking space.

Why these changes matter

Metlink’s newer buses are fully accessible, but to take full advantage of this, buses need to stop parallel to the kerb. This ensures customers can board and exit with step-free access—crucial for those with mobility challenges.

Aligning the bus stop design with NZTA’s Public Transport Design Guidelines ensures all passengers can board safely and comfortably - no matter the stop’s size or usage.

In addition, we are planning on extending the existing concrete pad to give passengers more room to get on and off the bus with ease.

Metlink recognise the importance of on-street parking and have worked to minimise changes, therefore, entry and exit tapers have been shortened from the standard 15 metres to 9 metres without compromising safety. Despite the parking space removal proposed, we believe there is sufficient alternative parking available on the opposite side of Tennyson Avenue and along High Street, which will continue to support access to local businesses and local services.
