New fares and the introduction of the MonthlyPlus pass

We've moved to zone-based tickets so your monthly pass will no longer have stations on it. This means that you can use your pass on any of the rail lines for the number of zones specified on the ticket.

The online purchase process stays the same – select the line and stations you want to travel between but the pass you receive may change – it will be a Rail Monthly pass or a MonthlyPlus pass:

  • You will get a MonthlyPlus if you select Wellington Railway Station and a station in zones 4 to 14
  • You will get a Rail Monthly pass if you select Wellington Railway Station and a station in zones 1 to 3, or any other combination of stations
The MonthlyPlus includes bus travel but if you need to catch the bus further than the zone where you get off the train, you’ll need to include that extra zone in your MonthlyPlus.   • We make your personal information available to our rail operator, Transdev, to send out your tickets. View our full privacy statement. Transdev also records the ticket number you are issued
  • Your ticket will be posted within six days of receiving your order and payment. It will be sent to your address via NZ Post
  • To give us time to get the tickets to you, online monthly pass sales for the following month close on 20th of each month eg you can purchase tickets for September up to 20 August. If you miss the cut-off you can still purchase tickets from our stations or ticket agents
