If you catch the train to work or school everyday purchasing a monthly train pass or a 10-Trip ticket is likely to be the most cost-effective option for you.

You will need to purchase the appropriate 10-Trip for Off-peak, Child/School, Tertiary and Accessible concessions to get the discounted fare.

The terms and conditions of your ticket are included in the Conditions of Travel.

10-Trip tickets

Rail 10-Trip tickets are the equivalent of the Snapper base fare on buses – a single trip on a 10-Trip ticket costs the same as the equivalent Snapper fare on buses. You:

If you have an old station-to-station 10-Trip ticket:

  • you have until 31 December 2018 to use it;
  • if you still have some 10-Trip tickets left after 31 December, there will be a six-month refund/swap-out window from 1 January 2019 to 30 June 2019 where you can either get a refund for unused tickets or swap them for new zone-based 10-trip tickets.

Rail 10-Trip tickets are used to deliver Off-Peak, Child, Tertiary and Accessible concessions for trains. There are four types of 10-Trip ticket and you will need to purchase the correct one to ensure you get the best fare for your journey:

Metlink Zone Adult Ten Ticket2

Adult 10-Trip

Can be used at any time and are the equivalent of the Snapper base fare on buses.
Metlink Zone Concession Ten Trip Ticket3

Concession 10-Trip

Provides a 50% discount on the Adult 10-Trip and is for use by school-aged children and those eligible for the Accessible Concession.

Child Concession

There is a 50% discount for school-aged children (5 to 18 years old or older if still at secondary school). Children under five travel for free.

Find out more about Child Concessions

Accessible Concession

To get the 50% discount you or someone else will need to buy a ticket before you get on board. The person buying the ticket does not need to show a Total Mobility Card or Blind Foundation ID card. A carer can travel with you for free.

For trains, there are two types of discounted tickets you can buy: a "Concession 10-Trip" ticket that is good for regular travel. The second type is a "Single Child Cash" ticket good for one-time trips. Single cash tickets cost slightly more because they are rounded up to the nearest 50c.

You will need to show Metlink staff your Total Mobility Card or Blind Foundation ID card, if asked.

Metlink Zone Offpeak Ten Trip Ticket2

Off Peak 10-Trip

If your plans are flexible you can travel off-peak with a 25% discount - there is no off-peak discount on cash. Off-peak fares apply all weekend as well. Off-peak hours:

  • 9:00am - 3:00pm and after 6:30pm weekdays
  • All day weekends and public holidays

If you catch the train during off-peak hours, your whole journey is charged at off-peak rates. So if you start your journey before 3:00pm and transfer or finish your journey after 3:00pm you still only pay off-peak fares.

Off-peak fares do not apply to cash fares or if you are travelling on another discount including child, tertiary student and accessible.

Metlink Zone Tertiary Ten Trip Ticket2

Tertiary 10-Trip

If you are a full-time tertiary student you can buy a Tertiary 10-Trip by showing your valid student ID with a sticker attached from your Tertiary Education Organisation and receive a 25% discount.

When travelling on the Tertiary Concession you will need to keep your student ID handy and show it to Metlink staff if requested. Your concession will remain valid as long as you meet the eligibility conditions for Tertiary Concession.
