Travel using a SuperGold and Veteran's SuperGold Card
If you are eligible for SuperGold card, or Veteran’s SuperGold card you can travel on Metlink bus or train services for free during off-peak hours:
- Weekdays 9:00am - 3:00pm and after 6:30pm
- Weekends and Public Holidays All day
All you need to do is start your bus journey or rail trip on a service scheduled at your departure stop at an off-peak time.
Under 65’s may also be eligible for a SuperGold Card or a Veteran’s SuperGold Card. You may be eligible if you are the partner of someone receiving NZ Super or the Veteran’s pension.
Please be aware that when using a SuperGold card or Veteran’s SuperGold card to access free off-peak public transport you may be asked to show another form of ID.
Travel during peak hours
The SuperGold Card and Veteran’s SuperGold Card is not valid during peak hours, and so you will need to pay a full adult fare when travelling during this time.
Transfers for SuperGold card journeys in Wellington city
A small number of Metlink customers will need to transfer at major bus hubs.
So, if you start your journey on a Metlink bus in off-peak (before 3pm) with your SuperGold card, and need to transfer to another Metlink bus in the afternoon peak (after 3pm), you will be able to continue your off-peak journey for free if you transfer to a second Metlink bus between 3pm and 3.30pm in Wellington city.
To get the free afternoon transfer on your SuperGold card, all you need to do is tell the driver that you have transferred from a previous off-peak service, and get on – it’s that simple.
These SuperGold transfer provisions are only valid for an interim period until notified. They only apply to Metlink bus services in Wellington city and do not apply on Metlink trains or ferries, non Metlink services (such as the 91 Airport Flyer), or Metlink bus services outside Wellington city.
