A summer timetable will be in place while we make improvements to our network. Be sure to plan ahead as your usual service may be different.
Christmas Day Free Travel
Metlink are providing free travel on Christmas Day in the Wellington region for most bus and train services*
Whether you’re spending time with friends and family, or going solo, enjoy a day of free travel on us.
Please remember to still tag on and off the bus and train so we can keep track of your journey.
*Excludes Airport Express, the Wellington Harbour Ferry and Te Hunga Whaikaha Total Mobility services.
Fares over the Holiday Period
Metlink are providing free travel on Christmas Day in the Wellington region for bus and train services.
During the holiday period, standard fares still apply on weekdays that are not public holidays, during peak hours (29, 30, 31 December 2025 and 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 January 2026).
Off-peak hours are:

Weekdays 9am to 3pm and after 6:30pm.

Weekends and public holidays.

Weekdays before 7am (buses only, excludes SuperGold card and buses replacing trains).
SuperGold card holders travel for free during off peak, all day on weekends and on public holidays.
There are works are happening across the entire rail network, from Thursday 25 December 2025 to Sunday 11 January 2026.
All train lines will be affected and won’t be fully operational during this time.
The Melling Line will be closed with no rail or bus replacement services from Thursday 25 December 2025. The Wairarapa Line will be bus replaced from Thursday 25 December 2025. The Kāpiti, Hutt Vlalley and Johnsonville Lines will be bus replaced from Friday 26 December 2025.
Some lines will be fully closed, some only partly, with some lines returning to normal services sooner than other lines.

Kāpiti Line
Buses will replace trains between:
- Wellington and Waikanae from Friday 26 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026.
- Porirua and Waikanae only from Monday 5 January to Sunday 11 January 2026.
Train services return to normal from Monday 12 January 2026.

Bus replacement timetables for summer will be available from Tuesday 25 November 2025.
Hutt Valley Line
Buses will replace trains between Wellington and Upper Hutt from Friday 26 December 2025 to Sunday 11 January 2026.
Train services return to normal from Monday 12 January 2026.

Bus replacement timetables for summer will be available from Tuesday 25 November 2025.
Wairarapa Line
Buses will replace trains between Wellington and Masterton from Thursday 25 December 2025 to Sunday 11 January 2026.
Train services return to normal from Monday 12 January 2026.

Bus replacement timetables for summer will be available from Tuesday 25 November 2025.
Johnsonville Line
Buses will replace trains between Wellington and Johnsonville from Friday 26 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026.
Train services return to normal from Monday 5 January 2026.

Bus replacement timetables for summer will be available from Tuesday 25 November 2025.
There are no rail or bus replacement services on the Melling Line between Thursday 25 December 2025 and Sunday 11 January 2026.
Train services return to normal from Monday 12 January 2026, departing and terminating at Western Hutt Station due to the closure of Melling Station from Wednesday 24 December 2025.

Using Snapper on Buses Replacement Services
Tag on and off onboard the bus replacement on all lines, except for the Wairarapa Line. Wairarapa Line customers need to tag on and off at the train station platform.
Using Snapper when transferring between a bus and train
When part of your train trip is replaced by a bus, remember to tag on and off for both parts of your journey:
- Tag on and off at the train station platform.
- Then tag on and off again onboard the bus replacement service.

You can find the BRT timetable on the online timetable page for the train service that is being bus replaced by clicking the dropdown menu labelled "Bus replacement & download timetable".
Ways to find BRT timetables via a service alert
When buses replace trains, a service alert will be attached to the service. Click the BRT icon shown on the website.

When clicking on a BRT icon in any of the above locations, the related service alert will open.

Buses
Buses will run on a summer timetable between Friday 26 December 2025 and Sunday 4 January 2026.
Services return to normal from Monday 5 January 2026.
Route 200: Martinborough - Featherston - Greytown - Masterton
The Route 200 will run on a weekend timetable between Thursday 25 December 2025 and Sunday 11 January 2026 with two extra trips on the following dates:
- Monday 29 December to Wednesday 31 December 2025.
- Monday 5 January to Friday 9 January 2026.
6.30am departing Martinborough and travelling to Masterton.
6.40pm departing Featherston and travelling to Martinborough.
Route 204: Greytown - Woodside
The Route 204 service will not run on the following dates:
- Monday 29 December to Wednesday 31 December 2025.
- Monday 5 January to Friday 9 January 2026.
Other Wairarapa buses (Routes 201, 202, 203 and 206)
All other Wairarapa buses will run on a summer timetable between Thursday 25 December 2025 and Sunday 11 January 2026.
All Wairarapa bus services return to normal from Monday 12 January 2026.
Queens Wharf - Days Bay (QDF)
The Queens Wharf - Days Bay ferry will run on a weekend timetable between Friday 26 December 2025 and Sunday 4 January 2026.
There is no service on Christmas Day.
Services return to normal timetables from Monday 5 January 2026.
Mātiu/Somes Island (MIF)

Other Services
Te Hunga Whaikaha Total Mobility
