Metlink is listening. In response to community feedback we are extending the number 14 bus to Kilbirnie from Hataitai. As a result, we are reviewing the direction of the route through Hataitai and have developed three options in consultation with community volunteers.

Your responses will be collated and help us choose the best option to meet local needs.

Please note that changes to bus stops are subject to planning and permitting. This may affect implementation timelines but we hope to have changes completed as soon as practically possible to meet the needs of Hataitai residents.

Background

Earlier this year Metlink introduced a new bus network for Wellington City. Residents in Hataitai told us they wanted a closer look at the number 14 bus route. In this brochure you will find three options to choose between.

This is the current route which has been in place since July, 2018:

Current route1.2

New bus route options in Hataitai

Working with the local community we’ve developed three options, each with their own benefits and trade-offs:

Option A Extend to Kilbirnie, via Hataitai Road inbound, Waipapa Road outbound (similar to current route since July 15, 2018)
Option B Extend to Kilbirnie, via Waipapa Road both directions (route as it was before July 15, 2018)
Option C Extend to Kilbirnie, via Hataitai Road in both directions

 Common to all options:

  • Route 14 will be extended to the new Kilbirnie Bus Hub
  • Route 14 continues to travel along the same roads between Roseneath and Wilton via the CBD
  • Morning peak-only bus route 35 continues to operate as currently (equivalent peak-only afternoon service is planned to be introduced early 2019)

Option A: Extend to Kilbirnie, via Hataitai Road inbound, Waipapa Road outbound

Option A 1.2

Key features:

  • Less convenient access to bus service to city for residents of Waipapa Road and Arawa Road
  • Maintains current operation of service (since July 15, 2018)
  • Equivalent access to bus services for residents to the west of and on Hataitai Road and for residents to the east of and on Waipapa Road
  • No further changes to bus stops required Retain Real Time Information display screen at Hataitai Road Stop C
  • This may require some people, with limited mobility, to take two buses when travelling from Kilbirnie to Waipapa Road and neighbouring streets. Getting off the inbound bus at the top of Hataitai Road and catching the outbound bus down Arawa Road.

Option B: Extend to Kilbirnie, via Waipapa Road both directions

Option B 1.2

Key features:

  • Revert to the route as it was before July 15, 2018
  • Less convenient access to bus service for residents to the west of and on Hataitai Road
More convenient access to bus service for residents on Arawa Road, and from residents to the east of and on Waipapa Road
  • Inbound bus stops on Waipapa Road will return to where they were before 15 July 2018, changing from school time only to seven days a week, all day:

a. Two bus stops on Waitoa Road – 7535 and 6535
b. 7534 – near 96 Waipapa Road
c. 7533 – Waipapa Road at Huia Road
d. 7532 -Waipapa Road opposite Peranga Terrace
e. 7531 -Waipapa Road at Arawa Road
f. 7530 – Arawa Road at Hohiria Road

  • Bus stops on Hataitai Road still required as they service the peak-only route 35. Time restrictions on the bus stops will need to change from 7 days a week to weekday peak only
  • Remove and relocate Real Time Information display screen from Hataitai Road Stop C
  • Hataitai Road is narrower for buses than Waipapa Road

Option C: Extend to Kilbirnie, via Hataitai Road in both directions

Option C 1.2

Key features:

  • Change to current operation of service (since July 15, 2018)
  • Less convenient access to bus service for residents on Arawa Road, and from residents to the east of and on Waipapa Road
  • More convenient access to bus service for residents to the west of and on Hataitai Road
  • Three new outbound bus stops needed on Hataitai Road

a. Vicinity of Hataitai Road at Waitoa Road
b. Vicinity of Hataitai Road between Konini Road and Huia Road
c. Potentially another stop on Hataitai Road prior to intersection with Arawa Road

  • New stops are likely to require removal of on-street carparks
  • Bus stops on Waipapa Road and Arawa Road still required to service the peak-only route 35 and school routes. Time restrictions on the bus stops will need to change from 7 days a week to weekday peak and school times only
  • Retain Real Time Information display screen at Hataitai Road Stop C
  • Hataitai Road is narrower for buses than Waipapa Road
