Travel for free on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve!
Visiting friends and family this holiday season? Metlink’s here to help with FREE travel for bus and train services on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.
Simply board your bus or train and ride for free on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, up until 4am 1 January 2021.
If you’re planning to travel further afield, be aware that the Wairarapa buses and trains don’t operate on Christmas Day. Double-check before you travel.
When everyone’s on holiday we can really go to work.
The Christmas/New Year period is pretty quiet for customers travelling on the Metlink network. That makes it the perfect time to get work done on the train tracks.
This year the usual line closures will be extended by a week to accommodate extra upgrades and maintenance. You’ll still be able to get around though. Buses replacing trains will be available whenever the lines are being worked on. Lines will return to normal by Monday 11 January 2021.
Check out the Bus Replacements page or download the holiday season buses replacing trains timetable below.
Below are some key pieces of work the team plan to get done this holiday season.
Wellington Station: Wellington Station Overhead Line Replacement Project
The team will be busy replacing overhead structures at Wellington Station. Ten kilometres of old overhead lines and numerous existing wooden structures will be coming down to be replaced with new wiring held up by new structures.
Johnsonville Line: Johnsonville Tunnels Project
A full sleeper replacement will be happening in all seven tunnels along the line. Each of the tunnels are between 100 - 200m long, and the team are replacing around 1,600 wooden sleepers with concrete ones.
In addition to the tunnel project work, the teams will continue to maintain the network with some track re-laying. This includes rail and sleeper replacement between Ngaio and Awarua Street stations.
Kāpiti Line: Plimmerton Station Upgrade Project
This work involves extending the underpass and renewing the access ramp to allow other upgrade work to begin. The team will also undertake seismic strengthening of the original 1950’s section.
Similar to other lines, sleeper replacement on the Old Hutt Road rail overbridge between Kaiwharawhara and Takapu Road will be done to help maintain our rail network.
There will also be some sleeper replacements between Paremata and Pukerua Bay, level crossing sleeper replacement at Steyne Ave, rail crossover (turnout) replacement at Paekākāriki and rail replacement works between Tawa and Linden stations. Keep your eyes out for these works to see progress.
Hutt Valley Line: Trentham to Upper Hutt double-tracking
Trentham Station will be closed from 6 December 2020 to make significant progress on the double tracking project. The station will remain closed until 16 January 2021.
The team will also be busy working on upgrading the platform, as well as upgrading our signalling system at various locations.
Hutt Valley Line: Petone Underpass
As part of the Te Ara Tūpuna walking and cycleway project we will be partnering with Waka Kotahi, NZ Transport Agency to install a new underpass just south of Petone Station.
As always, our team will be working on many different projects to help maintain our rail network. To find out more about the work taking place on your network, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
