In July 2016 an exciting new era began for Wellington rail customers when Transdev Wellington took charge of running the region’s rail services.

In 2016 we completed improvements to the Metlink rail service

These included:

  • Modern electric Matangi trains, which replaced the entire old Ganz Mavag fleet
  • New stations at Tawa, Naenae, Paraparaumu and Upper Hutt
  • More Park & Rides and space on board trains for wheelchairs and bikes
  • Improved punctuality. The operator, Transdev Wellington (external link)  is measured on tougher punctuality criteria, which means a better service for you
  •  Immediate disruption and delay information keep informed so you can make alternative travel choices. You can get this information  by setting up a My Metlink account (external link)
  • A mobile-friendly website ( (external link) ) which uses Real Time Information (RTI) for up-to-the minute information on when a train service is due to arrive,  giving you better journey planning at your fingertips
  • A new Real Time (RTI) app, Metlink Commuter, which also keeps you up to date with notifications

Wellington rail services are now consolidated under the Metlink brand:
