Commuters on peak time Wellington to Waikanae services are set to get more room on their ride home.
From Tuesday (April 26) two units will be added to the 4.35pm and 5.17pm Wellington to Waikanae service. The extra units are able to carry an additional 250 passengers per service.
Paul Swain, Chair of Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Sustainable Transport Committee, says the Council and KiwiRail had worked together to increase capacity after a noticeable surge in the number of people taking the train on the Kapiti Line this year.
“It’s likely that the road works at Raumati Straights have encouraged more people to leave their cars at home or the station and take the train, which is great, but we need to make sure there’s room for the extra passengers.”
Tranz Metro manager David Shepherd, says staff had identified the two afternoon peak services as the ones in most demand. “The extra units will certainly ease crowding and make the journey more comfortable for everyone,” says Tranz Metro manager David Shepherd.
The increased passenger numbers have been matched by a strong on-time performance – in March 97 percent of Tranz Metro trains were on time to within 5 minutes.
