Wellington Zoo

Wellington Zoo (external link) in Newtown is a much-loved destination for visitors and locals alike. There are a few ways to get there from Wellington Railway Station by bus.

z is for zooIntroducing the 23z

On 3 February we introduced the route 23z (external link) , a trial service that will run from Wellington Station to the Zoo on weekdays and weekends. It'll provide more services for Newtown residents and visitors to the Zoo. If it proves successful, we'll keep the service up and running permanently.

On weekdays the last route 23z service headed to Wellington Zoo leaves Wellington Station at 2.05pm. After that, the route 23e (external link) will travel from Wellington Station to the Zoo from 3.10pm. You can find the service hours for the 23z below. Make sure to also check your timetable before you travel.

 

Weekdays

  • Wellington Station to Zoo (hourly service 9.05am - 2.05pm, 23e service thereafter from 3.05pm)
  • Zoo to Wellington Station (hourly 10.35am - 5.35pm)

Weekends

  • Wellington Station to Zoo (hourly 9.05am – 5.05pm)
  • Zoo to Wellington Station (hourly 9.35am – 5.35pm)

Zealandia

Zealandia (external link) is in Karori. It is the world’s first fully-fenced urban eco-sanctuary, planning to restore a Wellington valley’s forest and freshwater ecosystems as closely as possible to their pre-human state. The 225 hectare sanctuary has reintroduced many species of native birds back into the area, some of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years. 

A number of Metlink buses take you within about five minutes walk. If you want a real Wellington experience, catch the cable car to Kelburn and walk around 30 minutes to Zealandia. Otherwise we have a good selection of Metlink buses that will get you there – here are some suggestions:

Runs between Seatoun and Karori. Get off at Stop 5320 - Zealandia at Chaytor Street and follow the Zealandia signs down Waiapu Road. Bus 2 runs approximately every 10 minutes from the city between 8am and 6pm on weekdays, every 15 minutes during the weekend 9am-6.30pm on Saturdays, and 10am-6pm on Sundays and public holidays. Please refer to the timetable for specific times.

Bus 18e    (external link) Runs between Karori and Miramar via Kelburn, Te Aro, Newtown, and Kilbirnie. Services run approximately every 20 minutes during peak times, and every hour during off-peak hours, which includes weekends. Hop off at stop 5320 at Chaytor Street by Appleton Park and head up Waiapu Road to Zealandia. Please refer to the timetable for specific times. 
Bus 21 (external link) Runs between Courtenay Place and Karori approximately every 30 minutes between 9am and 8.30pm, on weekdays with extra services at peak times. Runs approximately every 30 minutes 9.30am-5.30pm on Saturdays, and hourly on Sundays and public holidays.  Hop off at Stop 5380 - Birdwood Street and follow the Zealandia signs down Waiapu Road. Please refer to the timetable for specific times, as some weekday services terminate at Victoria University, Kelburn Parade.
Bus 22 (external link) Runs between Wellington Station and Johnsonville. Jump off at Stop 5920 Zealandia – Northland Tunnel Road and follow the Zealandia signs down Waiapu Road. Services depart Wellington Station towards Zealandia approximately every 30 minutes between 9am and 8.30pm on weekdays, 9.30am-5.30pm on Saturdays, and hourly on Sundays and public holidays. Please refer to the timetable for specific times, as some weekday services terminate at Victoria University, Kelburn Parade.
Bus 25  (external link) Runs between Khandallah to Highbury via Wellington Station and Victoria Street. Services are approximately every 30 minutes between 8.30am and 6pm on weekdays, 9am-5pm on Saturdays, and hourly on Sundays and public holidays. Jump off at Stop 5942 on Moana Road and follow the connecting walkway from Moana Road down to Waiapu Road. Please refer to the timetable for specific times, as some weekday services terminate at Victoria Street.
