Travelling to and from school in Term 3
We have made some big changes to buses and trains in the Wellington region, so we'd expect a few bumps in the road as our new network beds in. We're working hard to minimise any inconvenience to your but there may be a few services that don't run as planned.
For the short term, we are asking you to bear with us while we do everything we can to iron out the bumps - there's a few things you can do to be prepared for the start of term three including:
Paying for the school bus or train in Term 3
There is a 50% discount for children on Metlink services, as long as they use Snapper on buses or a 10-Trip or monthly pass on trains.
Metlink school buses will only accept Snapper cards or cash
Snapper cards are now accepted on all Metlink buses. School term passes have been discontinued. If you don't have a Snapper card you can purchase from Snapper retailers or the Snapper website (external link) and remember you need to ensure it is loaded with a child concession to receive the 50% discount.
Catching Metlink trains to school
Children can use these tickets and passes to get to school:
- Concession 10-trip ticket - this provides travel at 50% of the adult 10-Trip ticket fare
- Rail Monthly pass - if they travel between Zones 1 and 3 or the trip to school doesn't involve travelling to or from Wellington Railway station
- MonthlyPlus pass - if your child's trip to school involves travelling from Zone 4 or further out through Wellington Railway Station (Zone 1) they can use a MonthlyPlus pass. The added benefit of this pass is that bus travel from Zone 4 and further out is included - they just need to show the pass to the driver. However travel on school buses or within Zones 1 to 3 is not covered.
- Cash - but this will be the more expensive option
Rail term monthly passes have been discontinued.
