Performers and Volunteers at Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival will be able to travel to and from the competition, and around the region, for free on all Metlink train and bus services.

Hosted by the region’s three Iwi – Ngati Toa, Te Atiawa-Taranaki Whanui, Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga and the Wellington Māori Cultural Society – Te Matatini is expected to attract about 60,000 people to the region, including 2,400 performers and 150 volunteers.

How to access the free travel

  • If you are performing, or volunteering you are eligible to travel on the region’s Metlink buses and trains. Simply show the bus driver, or train manager your official Te Matatini event pass (lanyard) and off you go!
  • You will be able to travel from 21 February to Sunday 24 February by using your event pass.
  • Those who do not have an official Te Matatini event pass can travel using the Metlink Explorer Day Pass, which also provides free travel for an accompanying child between the ages of 5 and 15.
