txtBUS FAQ

Can I use free text for this service?

All text messages cost 20 cents and are not part of your free text allowance.

Why did I receive an error message?

Errors could occur if:

  • You text an incorrect or non-existent stop number.
  • You text using letters rather than numbers in the stop number such as "855o".
  • There are no bus trips in the next 23 hours serving the bus stop.
  • If the system is down it will say system not available.

If you text in wrong information it will say "sorry there are no bus services that satisfy your request. For help phone Metlink 0800 801 700".

Do I have to pay if the system is down?

All text messages cost 20 cents. However the error message will include the free 0800 Metlink number so you can get further information without incurring any extra cost.

How do I find my bus stop number?

Bus stop numbers are displayed on the bus stop sign. You can also use 'Your stop info' on the homepage to find your 4 digit bus stop number.

Why am I getting services in only one direction? I want the other direction.

This is probably because it is a bi-directional bus stop, eg Eastbourne at Queensgate stop B. The system will give you only the next 3 buses that pass your stop even if these happen to be in the "wrong" direction for you.

  • The message you receive will tell you the destination, eg 83East@9:05, 81City@10:15.
  • If you receive "wrong direction" information, please try again later or ring the Metlink service centre on 0800 801 700.

Why can't I just enter my route number and receive the times?

The system provides individual times for each bus stop. Other services may be developed in the future based on feedback. All messages are limited by the 160 character limit for texting.
