2008/09 Highlights


Greater Wellington Public Transport Statistics (updated 21 September 2009)

  • During the year, Greater Wellington funded almost 1.2 million bus, rail and ferry services.
  • A total of 35.4 million passenger trips were made on the region's public bus, train and ferry services in the 2008/09 year, an increase of 2.14% over the previous year.
  • Train patronage increased 2.8%.
  • Bus patronage increased 1.8%. 
  • Harbour ferry patronage increased 1.6%.
  • Greater Wellington residents have access to 5 rail lines and 103 bus routes as well as a harbour ferry and cable car line.
  • 90% of residents live within 400 metres (approximately 5 minutes walk) of a bus stop or train station.
  • There are 2,800 bus stops, 47 train stations, 5 harbour ferry wharves and 5 cable car stops.
  • Approximately 850 bus stops have a shelter provided.

2006 Census Data

At the 2006 Census 17% of greater Wellington residents indicated they used public transport to travel to work. This compares with just 7% in Auckland and 4% in Canterbury. Over recent years greater Wellington residents have been increasing their use of public transport for commuting with 15% in 1996 and 16% in 2001 using public transport for travel to work.
