A new bus service for Riverstone Terraces residents will begin next Monday 15 October.

Peter Glensor, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Economic Wellbeing Committee, says the trial service will consist of one morning and afternoon journey each weekday during the school term.

“The service, an extension of the #114 Poets Block route, is largely for Riverstone Terraces students who go to schools in Upper Hutt, i.e. St Joseph’s, Fergusson and Maidstone Intermediates and Upper Hutt College.

Of course other residents can use the service to travel to and from the local shopping centres or railway stations.

“From next Monday 15 October a bus will run from Trentham Station at 8am, up Kirton Drive to Percy Kinsman Crescent, then back down and on to Upper Hutt.

An afternoon return service will begin at 3.05pm from St Josephs School in Upper Hutt and run to Riverstone Terraces then on to Trentham.

“The bus will get to Riverstone Terraces just after 8.10am so parents need to make sure their children are on Kirton Drive around that time to catch the bus. It will return to Riverstone Terraces about 3.35pm each day.

“Initially, bus stops will be hail and ride through Riverstone Terraces. This means you can catch the bus from anywhere along the route – all you need to do is wave out to the bus driver.

Experience with similar services shows that after a couple of weeks popular pick up and drop off points become clear, especially where children gather to go to school.”

Peter Glensor says the new service will be trialled for six months. “So if people want to keep this service they have to make sure they use it.”

Paul Swain, Greater Wellington regional councillor representing Upper Hutt, says he is very pleased that Greater Wellington was trialling a much needed bus service in Riverstone.

“Over the last few months I’ve worked with a group of local residents, Mayor Wayne Guppy and Greater Wellington staff to get this trial under way.

“People have been telling us that a bus service is long overdue and I hope it will be well used by the local community.”
