Can I take my cycle on public transport?
Bus – no.
Train – yes. Cycles need to go into the baggage compartment. Please see train staff before you load or unload your cycle. Baggage compartments are marked clearly on all trains, and depending on the service there will be a minimum of one and a maximum of four compartments.
You’ll need to be able to lift your cycle up to train staff.
They will secure it and they’ll also pass it back to you at the other end.
Cycles are not permitted in the passenger compartment.
The trains can carry a maximum of two cycles in each baggage compartment. The Wairarapa services have their own baggage van and can carry more cycles, depending on the amount of other baggage on the train.
Cycle space is limited. Train staff will use their discretion about deciding whether or not cycles can go on the train for the journey. There are no guarantees. If there is no space for your cycle on the train, you can choose to wait for the next train.
Cycles are not permitted on trains for special events and when buses replace trains.
There is no charge for cycle carriage. The policy for the carriage of cycles on trains is to be evaluated before the new Matangi trains come into service.
Harbour Ferry – Yes. Normally ferries can take six to eight cycles per crossing, but it depends on how busy they are. If you are part of a group travelling with cycles it is best to call first on 04 499 1282.
Cycle lockers assist commuters by providing a safe and secure place to leave their bicycle and gear.
Cycle lockers are supplied and funded by Greater Wellington Regional Council and administered by Kiwirail and local authorities. Greater Wellington officers are currently reviewing this service, so there may changes in the near future.
Cycle lockers are allocated to users for a minimum six-month period. Typically users pay a key deposit and administration/maintenance fee, however currently each administrator operates independently and therefore charges and conditions vary.
Administration of our existing long-term lockers is carried out by:
Please see below for a list of stations with cycle lockers.
